Biblical vs Social Justice

Paul Harvey was 1 of the most famous radio personalities of the 20th century. He went on the air with shows like The Rest of the Story & was a staple of America radio for decades.

He was also a devout Christian who was deeply concerned that the United States was abandoning God and morality at her own peril. He expressed this in a powerful way with his 1964 radio essay If I were the Devil

Play Paul Harvey YouTube video

Today 50 years later…
If I were the devil, I strategize a plan to…
Lock up the weak or fearful in their homes
& let the strong & violent run loose to create havoc

I’d put civil authority in a position where they can’t act to protect property
but rebel mobs r allowed to destroy it.
You can’t shop in a store, but u can loot it.
You can’t work, but you’re free to steal.
You can’t attend church, but u can burn it down.
You can’t eat in a restaurant, but u can demolish it

And by the way,
If you worship the god of anger, the god of hate, or the god of vengeance,
u can no longer hold church anywhere, anytime indoors or outdoors, without stringent rules
But you’re completely free to worship the god of mayhem where & when u please

& add that to hold to account the few abhorrent evil law officers the resolution is to abolish all police who serve as protectors of good & restrainers of those who do evil.

“In other words,”
“If I were the devil, I’d still just keep
right on doing what he’s doing.”

Paul Harvey’s essay rings prophetically as America has not only been in a physical lockdown
but a spiritual suppression where evil is seen as good & good is seen as evil
Stoking much of this chaos is the media, both on the left and on the right…
…& Americans have been binging on it.

Obviously, not all media outlets are the same, nor or all journalists cut from the same cloth.
There are those who seek to be honest & forthright as their predecessors, Paul Harvey
However, today’s media outlets all have 1 thing in common…
They offer exclusively…the “wisdom of this world”

& as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ we need to know when to pull the plug
& Instead, remain focused on the only sure truth as revealed in the only sacred book, the Bible.

The Bible is holy…the Secular Media… not so much & of which BTW… the Bible declares.
…Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world 1 Corinthians 1:20

The Apostle Paul clearly understood the fallacy of people relying solely on the world’s wisdom.
In fact, He even wrote of his own rhetoric in 1 Cor 2: 4, 5 saying…
& my preaching was not w enticing words of man’s wisdom but in demonstration of the spirit
of power that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of God
1 Cor 2: 4, 5

I’m not saying the information media provide is of no value, but I am saying, as believers we must be discerning & seek a balance between what we allot to media fair and the amount of time we spend in God’s word. We need the truth that is in the Word of God.
‘Every word of God is flawless.
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you
and prove you a liar.
Proverbs 30:5-6

So today as we approach the subject of Biblical vs. Justice Social,
it’s not my aim to give human opinion. Neither mine nor anyone else.
But we do desperately Need to Hear from God

So, let’s allow the bible reveal and define Biblical justice
Let’s discern the dissimilarities between Biblical justice & todays Social Justice
And most important…lets devote ourselves to Biblical Justice

So, what is Biblical justice? Defined
The word Justice in Scripture simply means To Prescribe the Right Way.

Biblical justice therefore provides society with a divine frame of reference from which to operate using Scripture as the defining template for how it is to function.

For example (Duet 32:4) The scripture declares
God is just! The Rock! His work is perfect,
For all His ways are just.

A God of faithfulness & without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He.

Not only is God just but God is the ultimate lawgiver
Psalm s19:7–9
The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; ……

James 4:12
There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the 1 who can save & to destroy
but who are you who judge your neighbor?

God’s laws are to be applied without partiality, as biblical justice identifies the true moral standard by which God measures human conduct

Deuteronomy 1:17
You shall not show partiality in judgment.
You shall hear the small and the great alike.

Leviticus 19:15
‘You shall do no injustice in judgment. you shall not be partial to the poor
nor defer to the great but you are to judge your neighbor fairly

& as we have been pointing out in our series, it is the role of civil government
to be God’s delegated instrument of Divine Justice by impartially establishing,
reflecting, & applying His divine standards of justice equally in society

• Psalm 72:1–2
• 2 Samuel 8:15
• Deuteronomy 4:7–8

Exodus 23:3, 6
Nor shall you be partial to a poor man in his dispute. You shall not pervert the justice
due to your needy brother in his dispute. Keep far from a false charge, & do not kill the innocent or the righteous, for I will not acquit the guilty.

Biblical justice, therefore, can be more clearly defined as follows:
The equitable and impartial application of the rule of God’s moral law in society.

The 1 constant factor that government is to guarantee in the areas of economic, political, social, or criminal justice is the understanding & application of an established moral law within the social realm.

Civil government exists, therefore, to promote personal & collective freedom thru resisting evil & overseeing the proliferation of good thru maintaining a just society.

When a government fails to do this w equity for all, it is typically the masses who suffer as a result. Need we say more…with all that is going on at both an individual & societal level
which brings us to Biblical Justice’s Direction.
Biblical Justice’s aim to protect individual liberty while promoting personal responsibility.

Galatians 5:13
For u were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity
for the flesh, but through love serve 1 another.

While the founding fathers fought for freedom, for themselves in establishing America,
most were unwilling to give it to others as demonstrated by the evil of American slavery.

So, there are those, led of God in govt, to right the wrong,
• Abraham Lincoln: The Emancipation Proclamation
o September 22, 1862,
• Congress: The 14th amendment
o July 9, 1868
• Dr. Martin Luther King: The Civil Rights Act
o July 2, 1964

& Today because freedom is so important, we must be involved in the struggle,
not only in standing for ourselves but empowering others to experience it
& that brings us to the fork in the road, as there is a contrasting path of peaceful resolution
& Even lawful & righteous civil disobedience, with the dis-similarity of violence & lawlessness
of today’s social justice warriors.

Social justice today is a convoluted term, which conjures up different meanings depending on who is speaking and to whom one is listening. It is frequently used as a catchphrase for illegitimate forms of government, promoting the redistribution of wealth, rather than for the redistribution of opportunity where illegitimate impediments are removed, giving individuals the opportunity to maximize their potential

Likewise, current social justice descriptions often favor the collectivistic expansion of civil government which infringes on the jurisdictions of God’s other covenantal institutions
(Family & Church). In a nutshell Biblical Justice, aims to protect individual liberty.

Romans 14:12
So, then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

…while promoting personal responsibility
Matthew 16:27
For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels,
& will then repay every man according to his deeds.

True recompense for what you did with where you started in life & completed
& as well ,the scripture gives a picture of a corporate or national responsibility.

“For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.
(Listen to this…speaking of the nation of Israel 700 years before God’s Messiah)
You have acted foolishly in this. You have rejected Me, and my ways
& Indeed, from now on you will surely have wars.”
2 Chronicles 16: 9

To go back in history to a national reckoning, we can start in the book of Isaiah,
way back in the 1st chapter & In Chap. 1, the Lord speaks to Israel in v 2:

“Listen, O heavens, and hear, O earth; for the Lord speaks,
‘Sons I have reared and brought up, but they have revolted against Me.
An ox knows its owner, & a donkey its master’s manger,
but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.’
Alas, sinful nation, people weighed down w iniquity, offspring of evildoers,
sons who act corruptly! They have abandoned the Lord,
they have despised the Holy 1 of Israel, they have turned away from Him.
Where will you be stricken again as you continue in your rebellion?

The whole head is sick, the whole heart is faint.
From the sole of the foot even to the head there is nothing sound in it,
only bruises, welts & raw wounds, not pressed out or bandaged, not softened with oil.
Your land is desolate, your cities are burned with fire.”

This is the desolation of a people that turn against God and His Justice,
In the 5th Ch. v 20 of Isaiah’s prophecy there is a specific indictment among
all the sins that were part of Israel’s rebellion against God
Here is 1 that substantially defines their true condition

“Woe to those who call evil good, & good evil; who substitute darkness for light
& light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet & sweet for bitter!”
Isaiah 5:20

Essentially that’s the sin that signals the coming of judgment. Turning truth & righteousness
& virtue upside-down. Israel was headed 4 a devastating divine Judgment
They had turned against God. How?

They had flipped Truth & Morality on its head
and in Isaiah 28:17, Isaiah says They Found Refuge In Lies,
Isaiah 28:17

This is where humanity in every generation & in every nation tends to lean toward
the reality of the very things that were true of ancient Israel.

Humanity leans in the direction of calling evil good and good evil,
substituting darkness for light, light for darkness, substituting bitter 4 sweet & sweet for bitter.

To believe lies, to follow the father of lies, minimizing our sins while maximize others,
& then to justify reform thru violence & lawlessness & the current situation in which we live
is just another historic manifestation & picture of the perversion of humanity. So confusing.

What is wrong?
What is wrong is exactly what is stated in Isaiah 5:20
“Woe” – that’s a Divine Curse – on those who call evil good, and good evil;
who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;
who substitute bitter for sweet & sweet for bitter!”

Why?
Is what’s wrong something environmental?
Is it something educational?
Is it something economic?
Is it social inequity?

As tragically despicable as what happened in Minneapolis is, the Issue in heaven court is
There is no fear of God before their eyes.” And in THE EYES of our Nation have rejected God

We’ve got a society where people bite into the fruit of being wiser than God
And ignoring His decrees. As a result, we have misinformed & quieted our own conscience
by deciding that we are better than our conscience says we are.

The conscience is a personal authority,
The family is a parental authority,
The government is a social authority,
We would do well to reflect on observations Paul Harvey made 50 years ago

They who sow the wind, shall reap the whirlwind
Hosea 8: 7

But There’s 1 more authority: That’s The Church. The church is a spiritual authority who is both a lion, who conquers evil & a lamb, slain to redeem & restores. We follow God word. We are our brother’s keeper & these issues of racism demand rout engagement, not by decrees of the wisdom of men, but by the word of God

A word for the church on true Biblical justice
Go to Matthew 5:13. I’ll just read vs 13 to 16, Matthew 5.

“You’re the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless,
how can it be made salty again? It’s no longer good for anything,
except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;
nor does anyone light a lamp & put it under a basket, but on the lampstand,
and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

• Others will join in

Psalm 28
Do not drag me away with the wicked, with those who do evil,
who speak cordially with their neighbors but harbor malice in their hearts.

Repay them for their deeds and for their evil work.
repay them for what their hands have done
and bring back on them what they deserve.
Because they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord
and what his hands have done,
he will tear them down & never build them up again.

Blessed be the Lord,
Because He has heard the voice of my supplication.
The Lord is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped;

Therefore, my heart exults,
And with my song I shall thank Him.
The Lord is their strength,
And He is a saving defense to His anointed.

Save Your people and bless Your inheritance.
Be their shepherd also and carry them forever.
